Using Second Life In Education

Hello, everyone! Today we will talk about Second Life, an online virtual world, developed and owned by the San Francisco-based firm Linden Lab and launched on June 23, 2003. As we said before, learning is a process that can be enhanced by technologies such as digital tools, educational platforms. These technologies make easier learning for students and they help students use what they learn effectively. One of the useful tools in education is Second Life. It is a three-dimensional virtual world where people can create avatars that represent them in the virtual world. In there, users can communicate with other avatars, objects, or environments through voice chat or texting. Users can talk about any topic that they have an interest in. Besides, they can create their own content called user-generated content, which encourages users to be more creative and productive. When we look at it from an educational perspective, it has rising popularity in learning environments because of its instructional purposes and contributions. In Second Life, teachers can create virtual classrooms and make the students communicate with the instructor and other students simultaneously. So that, students can take an active role in their learning and improve their communicative abilities.
